FIVE FOR LIFE® Basic Program (K-5)

The Basic (K-5) framework introduces students to the Five Components of Fitness and nutrition and reveals their connection to a fit and healthy life. As students move through the Basic Program, they are taught meaningful concepts which empower them to make healthy choices. The links between activity, exercise, fitness, health, and personal achievement are carefully woven together to provide all students with the opportunity for success. This activity-based program accomplishes learning goals using fun games and exciting activities that facilitate improvement in the Five Components of Fitness and the opportunity to practice essential motor skills. The Five for Life Basic Program includes a manual (over 300 pages, 17 instructional units) and resource CD (printable teaching materials).

Program Features

  • The Basic (K-5) curriculum provides fundamental fitness and health concepts to students in grades K-5 delivered in an activity-based setting. These concepts are taught through the use of instructional units that contain:
    • Fitness measurements used to establish baseline fitness for all students
    • Introductory goal setting principles
    • Fun activities used to educate children in the Five Components of Fitness, nutrition, human anatomy and initial fitness planning components
    • An understanding of how students can begin to realize they are responsible for their own fitness and health and have the ability to improve it
    • Movement opportunities that help students to learn that activity is a key factor in living a fit and healthy lifestyle
    • Activities that incorporate fundamental motor skills that increase oopportunities to learn
    • Detailed unit guidelines including essential questions
    • Goals and objectives for each unit and activity
    • Articulated essential vocabulary terms
    • Detailed equipment lists for each activity
    • Formative assessments aligned with content to check for understanding within each activity
    • Summative assessments aligned with content for each unit
    • Alignment with national and state standards
    • Subject integration (math, reading, writing, science, creative arts)
    • Alignment with Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts and Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects
